• Obi Cubana’s Business Hit as Family Feud Erupts Over Late Father’s Property

...One Sibling Accused of Declaring Others ‘Dead’ to Claim Ownership

A fresh twist has emerged in the ownership tussle surrounding Plot 81, Ademola Adetokunbo Crescent, Wuse II, Abuja — the property housing the popular Cubana Lounge — as businessman Dr. Obinna Iyiegbu, popularly known as Obi Cubana, becomes entangled in a deepening family dispute within the Amakaeze family.

On Tuesday morning, court sheriffs and police officers stormed the Cubana Lounge around 8 a.m. to enforce an eviction order purportedly granted to a new claimant, Mr. Collins Onwuzulike, who presented himself as having purchased the property from Rev. Chidiebere Amakaeze, one of the six siblings of the Amakaeze family.

However, the exercise took a suspicious turn when some of the supposed court officials and a number of police officers abruptly disappeared from the location mid-operation. Before vanishing, bailiffs had supervised the dismantling and evacuation of property belonging to the Lounge, including industrial generators and air conditioners. Staff members watched in shock as documents indicating an ongoing enforcement were pasted across the building.

OBI CUBANA REACTS TO THE CONTROVERSIAL EVICTION

Speaking on the development, Obi Cubana expressed concern over the integrity of the process and the unsettling family crisis behind the dispute. He disclosed that even though he had previously expressed interest in purchasing the property once he got wind of a possible sale, he declined the offer because one sibling alone was pushing to sell.

According to him, “It would be unfair, as a friend of the family, to buy the property from just one sibling when I know the others are still alive and have equal ownership rights. Buying from one person would mean taking sides and creating deeper problems among them. Tomorrow, the others may return to demand their share, and I won’t be part of planting discord in a family I am close to.”

He also revealed that he had been a long-term tenant on the property and later discovered that some of the rent he paid over the years was allegedly not disclosed to the full family. Instead, Rev. Chidiebere, who many assumed was managing the property on behalf of all, was allegedly sidelining his siblings.

ALLEGATION: REV. CHIDIEBERE DECLARED HIS SIBLINGS ‘DEAD’

In a shocking revelation, sources confirmed that Rev. Chidiebere Amakaeze reportedly swore an affidavit in court declaring all five of his siblings — Chukwunwem, Duluem, Adaolisa, Uju, and Chimmeri — as deceased. By doing so, he allegedly claimed sole authority to sell the property, paving the way for the purported N2 billion transaction involving Mr. Collins Onwuzulike of SEMC Investment Ltd.

This affidavit formed part of the documents used to secure a judgment from a High Court of the Federal Capital Territory sitting in Gwagwalada, which in July 2025 granted possession rights to Onwuzulike. The court claimed he had acquired the property through a Power of Attorney and Deed of Assignment executed on 1 May 2024.

FAMILY KICKS: 'THE JUDGMENT IS VOID'

The remaining siblings of the Amakaeze family have since surfaced — alive and well — declaring the judgment void and accusing Chidiebere of fraudulently misrepresenting them as dead.

They have filed a case at the High Court of the FCT, Bwari Division, challenging the sale and placing an official caveat on the property to prevent further transactions.

According to court filings, the five siblings insist they never consented to any sale and were never informed of it. The alleged fraudulent affidavit forms the crux of their criminal and civil action against their brother, who they claim acted alone to enrich himself.

LEGAL CONFUSION AND CONFLICTING COURT ORDERS

The controversy became further complicated when another order from the FCT High Court in Bwari was obtained, temporarily restraining Mr. Onwuzulike from taking possession of the property. Tuesday’s attempted eviction followed the expiration of that restraining order, though the family insists that no legitimate sale ever occurred.

Justice J.A. Aina of the Gwagwalada High Court had previously ordered law enforcement agencies, including the Inspector General of Police and the FCT Commissioner of Police, to assist the claimant in taking possession. Yet, the counteraction from the Bwari court has left both the police and the public uncertain about which ruling truly stands — especially with allegations of fraud now at the center of the case.

    THE BATTLE AHEAD

With the family now united against Rev. Chidiebere, the case is expected to evolve into a major legal showdown, potentially involving criminal charges for perjury, fraud, and illegal property transfer.

Meanwhile, the Cubana Lounge remains in a tense state, with its operations disrupted and its future at the property in jeopardy pending the court’s final decision.

  • Ịjụ Ase: An Igbo Cultural Approach to Happy Marriage?

Ịjụ ase/ịjụ ese is a part of Igbo culture before marriage takes place. Over the years, this important aspect of Igbo culture has been treated with disdain and the ill-consequence is detrimentally glaring.

What is ịjụ ase? It's an inquiry or background check on the family and status of someone one wants to spend the rest of his or her life with.

I have heard women discuss about getting married to their dream men, not knowing the men have families. They are married and lied to them that they are single. The first question I ask remains: Ụnụ jụrụ àse? Did you run background check?

From ịjụ ese you will find out about men that cannot live with a woman. They marry and pursue...marry and dump.. They have problems with their head even though they have money. It's not all about money but one's happiness and sanity. The question is, why does this man keep marrying and chasing his wives away? Ịjụ ese will take care of it. Ọọ onye agwụ? Is he an impotent? Ịjụ ese will answer.

Since people now do traditional marriage in Lagos and Abuja after meeting someone by the road, they fix date and marry, tell me how she'd know he has family elsewhere.

Marriage in Igbo culture is an institution. You don't rush it. It takes a systematic approach. It is a process. You wonder why our parents and grandparents stay peacefully and overcome many challenges.

Don't you think that disregard to this cultural process play a high percentage of role in the high rate of divorce taking place in Igbo land today?

You meet someone, you want to show your mates and the society you are now Mrs or Mr. You want to wear the wedding gown, expensive clothes and flaunt your rings. You don't want societal pressure anymore. You want to just marry to be taken care of. You just want money or flashy things. This is not bad. The question is, are you blindfolded by the flashy things you are seeing, thereby forgetting to know who you are getting married to? His background?

Now you rush and marry, you begin to experience horrible things, going inbox to inbox telling people to hide your "ID".

Things have changed, I know. Time and season. We now see people on social media and get married to them. That's interesting. It's imperative we make background check too on them. Spend more money to travel , do a secret background check on the man you are getting married to. Do not be overcrowded by what you see here. That one sounds intelligent, wear good clothes, drive good car, have good house isn't enough.

This aspect of ịjụ ase is done by parents. You wouldn't even know. You too can do it. This is the reason in some part of Igbo Culture, they don't like marrying outside their community. The reason is that, they are checking into the families they know very well should anything happen, they'd know how to iron it out. Of course, this isn't a guarantee for a successful marriage. But it rocks their boats.

Men too should run a background check on who they want to marry. Let beauty, handsomeness, flashy things, wealth not overpower our sense of reasoning.

I know some women married to stupendously wealthy men but gasp for attention and love and happiness. They live like strangers in their own home. They are seeing money but they are not touching it, not feeling it. Such men entrap them, use Barbwire around them, fence them with CCTV camera even in their toilets. Slavery. You see why I do advise ladies, ask questions before you marry, don't jump into marriage to please your parents or anymore. If possible, of course it's pertinent you have something running for you before you get married even if you aren't rich, at least have a little thing for yourself. The man who Pampers you during courtship, buy you cars can wake up in the middle of marriage take away everything and chase you away. It happens. It has happened to many I know personally.

Ịjụ ase, a very important aspect of Igbo Culture. Remember, family or genealogical psychology is placed on check during this exercise. Do they have trace of madness or psychosis in their blood? Some men and women are psychoses. That's why you see someone you think he or she is lovely and caring switches like network and fluctuates even stab their spouse over a little disagreement. Who still check this now?

We all want to marry because we have come of age. Age is against us. We are reaching our menopause and womenpause. We no longer have options or choices. Anything can go so that family, friends and society will not disturb us again.

    Nwanne, jụọkwa ese!

  • Court Sentences Suspended UNICAL Law Dean, Prof. Cyril Ndifon, to Five Years in Prison for S+x¥al Hara§§ment

The Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday sentenced suspended University of Calabar Law Dean, Prof. Cyril Ndifon, to five years in prison without an option of fine after finding him guilty of s+x¥al hara§§ment.

Justice James Omotosho ruled that the ICPC proved counts one and two beyond reasonable doubt.

Ndifon received two years for count one and five years for count two, to run concurrently. The court, however, discharged and acquitted Ndifon’s former lawyer, Sunny Anyanwu, of charges against him, holding that the ICPC failed to link him to the offences in counts three and four.

The amended charge dated January 19, 2024, contained four counts against Ndifon and Anyanwu. Ndifon was initially the sole defendant but Anyanwu was later joined over allegations that he attempted to pervert justice by calling and thr+atening a star witness during the case.

Counts one and two accused Ndifon of s+x¥ally hara§§ing female students. The ICPC said that while serving as Dean of Law, he asked a female diploma student, identified as TKJ, to send indecent photos via WhatsApp and repeatedly demanded a s+x¥al act in exchange for her admission into the law programme.

Ndifon testified in his defence, while a forensic analyst from the Office of the National Security Adviser, CSP Babagana Mingali, also took the stand.

Justice Omotosho held that the prosecution proved the offences, stating that Ndifon abused his office and took undue advantage of a student desperate for admission.
